Widespread and common.
Fens, grassland, open woodland, scrub, heathland and gardens.

A very variable species with a wide range of colour forms and patterns. A straight line bisects the forewing, and the forewing is usually coloured differently either side of this line. A fairly common variant also occurs where the wing is concolorous.
